Sail Away – Mozambique Dhow Safari

It’s January and you’re feeling the holiday blues big time. Trawls through the net and chats with your local travel agent aren’t really satisfying your wanderlust for adventures abroad and dreams of holiday 2013. Luckily for you Elysium is here to provide that spark of inspiration you need on these cold grey days. This time we’ve found a holiday experience perfect for the beach-loving discerning gent and his like-minded lady– the Mozambique Dhow Sailing Safari.

Tour specialist Acacia Africa has introduced the new holiday experience showing off the Indian Ocean wilderness of Mozambique’s east coast via a sea safari. The trip will open your eyes to the beauty of this amazing country, while those on the hunt for a holiday that will put your body through its paces whilst cutting through the azure waves in a dhow boat. This eight day expedition has an itinerary that takes in tropical islands, turquoise seas, ancient cultures and dives havens boasting some of the world’s finest coral reefs.

You’ll be travelling through the exotic islands of the Quirimbas Archipelago – lands that include Mogundula Island, Matemo Island and Ibo Island. Some of these islands are uninhabited tropical paradises that can only be reached by the traditional dhow boat. Once there, set off on foot or kayak to explore the mangroves. It’s the perfect kind of trip to discover a wilder side to Africa.

This particular area of Mozambique is also very up and coming and is famed for its unspoilt sea life; the chance to go swimming with dolphins, see humpback whales and kayak through the mangrove forest. Marine life is plentiful with over 350 species of reef fish including angelfish, manta rays, and even the elusive and endangered dugong. Along with witnessing some magical moments with nature you’ll also add new skills to your bow such as navigating the seas and getting hands on with wildlife.

It’s not all about long paddles in a boat – there are of course elements of luxury to this holiday too. The highlight is a three night stay at Ibo Island Lodge – offering massages, swimming pools and idyllic white sandy beaches to enjoy sipping cocktails and lazing the day away. Here’s a holiday that will renew the mind and the body.

Between the months of May and September is the best time to go – even though it’s official winter temperatures regularly hit above 30ºC (wishful thinking for the UK’s winters…and even summers!). There isn’t much rainfall either which insures underwater visibility is crystal clear. For those really keen to see Humpback whales July-September is the best time to get you and your lucky lady over. Going through the photos for the 2013 album will bring back special memories.
