Spring has arrived and as you hit the luxurious shops in search of the finest in style, its important you treat a loved one to the best London has to offer. The discerning gent was invited to the Savoy for afternoon tea in the Thames Foyer. The variety of distinctive afternoon tea available in London means there is much competition but Elysium Magazine sought to pick out what the Savoy had to offer.<\/p>\n

The first thing you are treated to is a little history. Afternoon Tea in the Thames Foyer is an experience that has been enjoyed for over 125 years. The trend began at The Savoy\u2019s \u2018Terrace Restaurant\u2019, where fashionable Edwardian couples came to enjoy mid-afternoon refreshments. By the 1920s, afternoon tea was a firm tradition at The Savoy, and soon the fashion turned to the th\u00e9s dansant. A permanent dance floor was installed, and the world-renowned Savoy bands made their debuts in the Thames Foyer, as Tango Teas and tea dances became all the rage.<\/p>\n

Today, the concept and the surroundings have been updated, giving classic elegance a modern twist. A wrought iron winter garden gazebo is a striking centrepiece, surrounded by sumptuously upholstered high backed chairs and low sofas and white linen clad tables. The tradition of live music continues, with a pianist playing during Afternoon Tea to an audience of paintings, portraying some of the room’s most famous regular guests.<\/p>\n

Created by The Savoy\u2019s Executive Pastry Chef, Ludwig Hely, the Afternoon Tea menu (from \u00a350 per person) offers the traditional Afternoon and High Tea favourites, including a range of teas served with finger sandwiches, homemade scones with clotted cream and jam \u2013 all served on tiered cake stands. Hely\u2019s menu also offers a range of delicate and imaginative pastries and signature cakes that are hand crafted each morning and are as delicious as they are beautiful. These certainly caught our attention when we arrived.<\/p>\n

The mix of the location, the venue, exceptional service and brilliant array of delights available with the tea meant we were won over by the Savoy. The Citrus with a Twist (Moist polenta cake, lemon marmalade, mascarpone Chantilly) and Savoy Eclair (Mango-passion fruit cremeux, milk chocolate whipped ganache) certainly got our vote. If you are looking for a place to treat a loved one while in London \u2013 this should be your first option.<\/p>\n
