Apple has just unveiled its latest tablet to the world, a fifth-generation iPad named the iPad Air. As you might have guessed, the new iPad Air is light and obscenely thin. With a release date ahead of the Christmas shopping rush, the time is right for Apple to thrust their new tablet upon the discerning gent looking for a shiny new gadget. Does the latest model have what it takes to top your Desire list? Let\u2019s find out.<\/p>\n

The Thin Tablet<\/b><\/h4>\n

As its name suggests, the iPad Air takes its lead from the MacBook Air with dimensions so svelte that you\u2019d think there was nothing inside the slither of polished casing. At just 7.5mm thick it\u2019s 20% thinner than its 9.5mm predecessor with a flat-backed designed similar to the iPad Mini. Elsewhere height and width remain the same as the previous iPad.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s also ridiculously light at just one pound in weight compared to 1.44 pound bulk of the last model. Apple is quick to claim the iPad Air is the lightest full-sized tabled on the market. It\u2019s similar in form to the new iPhone 5s<\/span><\/a><\/span> in terms of edging with a thinner bezel \u2013 it\u2019s a very handsome and sleek piece of kit.<\/p>\n

Improved Display<\/b><\/h4>\n

The iPad Air comes with a 9.7inch retina display packing in a resolution of 2,048 \u00d7 1,536. This gives the iPad Air 264 Pixels Per Inch (PPI) for a display with a slick appearance. However it\u2019s not the best display on the market with the Kindle Fire HDX (339 PPI) and Google Nexus 10 (300 PPI) both trumping Apple in the screen stakes.<\/p>\n

Powerhouse Performance<\/b><\/h4>\n

Perhaps the next most significant factor after the iPad Air\u2019s thinness is the power it packs. Running on the same 64-bit A7 processor as the iPhone 5s<\/span><\/a><\/span> Apple says the new chip doubles the iPad Air\u2019s graphics and processing performance compared to the 4th<\/sup> gen model. When that\u2019s compared to the original iPad it\u2019s got eight times the processing power and 72 times faster graphics. That\u2019s development right there!<\/p>\n

What Else?<\/b><\/h4>\n

The iPad has never been known for its camera features and the iPad Air isn’t going to change things. The rear camera is still just the 5 megapixel snapper from before although the front-facing 1.2 megapixel can now shoot in HD to benefit FaceTime fanatics. Apple also says battery life remains at 10 hours which is impressive considering they’ve fitted a smaller power unit. The iPad Air will be available in silver and space grey.<\/p>\n

Apple also announced the arrival of the new iPad Mini 2 which features a new retina display for the 7.9inch screen packing in the same resolution as the iPad Air.<\/p>\n

Pricing & Availability<\/b><\/h4>\n

The iPad Air will be available in the UK from the 1st<\/sup> November 2013 starting from \u00a3399 for the 16GB Wi-Fi and \u00a3499 for the 16GB cellular models.
