All New People, written by and starring Zach Braff, is set in the dead of winter, on Long Beach Island, New Jersey. Charlie (Zach Braff), has hit rock bottom. Away from the rest of the world, this perfect escape is interrupted by a motley parade of misfits who show up and change his plans. A hired beauty, a fireman, and an eccentric British real estate agent desperately trying to stay in the country all suddenly find themselves tangled together in a beach house where the mood is anything but sunny.
Zach provides a fantastic performance with his character usually being the basis of most of the jokes. Paul Hilton, Eve Myles and Susannah Fielding put in great performances and the constant humor provides a contrast to the underlying dark tale of the play.
The play mixes with recorded footage for each of the characters and provides a back story for why, essentially they are on Long Beach Island – alone. This does provide depth to the static stage where all the events take place and a sense of understanding for the characters.
The play is quirky, funny, depressingly sad but memorable and enjoyable. While Zach brings his Hollywood appeal to the show, the cast put in sterling performances which makes the play a must-see. The discerning gent would probably gain a few brownie points by booking some tickets and taking the lady to the show. It’s a guaranteed evening of entertainment and Zach doesn’t let you down.
